A client in Urbandale, IA, enlisted our team's help to create an area where they could sit and spend time outside. To get an idea of what they were looking for, we sat down with them for a design consultation. This meeting involved listening to their goals and vision, and we collaborated with them to design a charming patio space. Once everything was planned, we got to work bringing it to life! They have a wooden deck with steps leading down to a good-sized backyard, so we installed a circular paver patio at the base with a seating wall to provide durable, built-in places to sit. After that, we added a rock landscape bed around the back of the house and down the side to complement the new space!
A design consultation allowed us to get an idea of our client's goals for their patio project.
We wanted to ensure our team had a good idea of what our client wanted to achieve for their outdoor living project, so we sat down with them for a design consultation. We discussed their goals, the elements they wanted to incorporate, and where they would go. They have a back deck with steps leading down to one side of the backyard, so we collaborated with them to design a patio area at the base. We also helped them choose the materials and plan out the shape and size to accommodate how they wanted to use it. Once we created the design and got their approval, we moved forward with installation!
We installed a circular patio and seating wall at the base of their back deck steps.
Before anything else, we needed to install the foundation of their outdoor living space: the patio. We constructed it to have a landing from the wooden deck steps connecting to a circular section. Large, light-colored paving stones were used as the primary material to ensure durability, and we added a border around the entire patio and circular section with dark gray pavers; this clearly defines its unique shape and creates a separation between the circular and landing portions.
Additionally, we installed a concrete block seating wall along the edge of the circle patio to give our client additional, built-in places to sit. This wall complements the patio colors and fits seamlessly into the design so it looks like it's meant to be there.
A rock landscape bed with edging was installed.
The last step of this project was to install a rock landscape bed. This bed sits along the section of the patio nearest the house and extends down the side yard. We filled it with rocks in natural tones and added edging built from the same dark gray pavers as the patio to connect it. That way, the landscape bed is separated from the grass and has a cohesive look. Our client can now enjoy a beautiful, thoughtfully planned patio area for years to come.
